Knowing Your Strengths Building Your Future Now We all have strengths and weaknesses. However, it is sometimes easier to focus on skills or experience that we dont have rather than what we already have. If you take a moment to really assess your career you might be surprised how many things you know (and know really well.) Its just a matter of realizing that you are capable of a great deal and thats why it is key to know your strengths. Are you good at sales? Are you good at managing people? Are you good at finding ways to save money? There is a while laundry list of things you are good atit is just the matter of cataloguing them. Connect important projects to your strengths and if possible seek endorsements of people that respect your work to fully realize them. Also knowing your strengths gives you a better opportunity to overview your career and find out what other career paths out there might be right for you. For example, if you are good at sales and have a strong history of that you can play up that strength to go into an industry you might like (ie. If you like planes why not go into airplane sales or into the Airlines industrythe sky is the limit literary to what can work for you.) The major component to all this aside knowing your strengths is being creative. What do our archaeology graduates do after they leave the University of Manchester #2 Jons Story University of Manchester Careers Blog By John Piprani Continuing my exploration of what our UoM Archaeology graduates are doing now, this is Jon Dobbie’s story. I met Jon in the lab when he was working on his dissertation that was stone tool based. From analysing stone tools in the lab Jon has moved on to digging them out of the ground. This is how Jon became a man out standing in his field. What are you doing now? I am currently working as a field archaeologist at Cotswold Archaeology based in Andover. What is the best bit about your job? I enjoy many aspects of it, for example when we were fortunate enough to dig the ditches of a barrow cemetery, the satisfaction of seeing the end product of your work. This is also complemented on seeing how a site gradually pieces together during and after excavation. Also being lucky enough to be involved in some of the Palaeolithic sites we work on. What is the worst aspect! December, January and February! Working away for long periods can be tough. What did you do at UoM? (Archaeology? Museology? Degree? Masters? PhD?) I studied a BA in Archaeology. How long since you graduated? I graduated in 2016. How well did UoM prepare you for your current role? Very well. There is only so much you can be prepared for without actually doing it. But most companies are aware of this and train you appropriately. I also involved myself in projects which were not compulsory to the course. What was the most valuable aspect of your education to you? It’s tough to select a particular thing, in fact it was the combination of a wide range of aspects of my education that was valuable. I would say that for me the fieldwork was key in the fact it gave me a platform for further study and helped with my dissertation, but I suppose it depends on the direction you wish to pursue within the subject. What is the most important advice you would give to a younger you wanting to work in archaeology? Get involved with as many projects as possible. If fieldwork is an area you wish to pursue, it is valuable to contact companies over the summer to see if they have any work you can be involved in, to give you that foot in the door when it comes time to get work. Don’t be afraid to ask the department to be involved in extra-curricular work and attempt to focus upon your areas of interest. I have been fortunate enough to remain involved with the Jersey project, a dig the UoM was working on and is still ongoing. This is due to my constant pestering, plus involvement with the team who worked on it, many of whom also work for commercial units. This dig takes place in the summer, and I have been told that to some people it seems strange that I take a holiday from digging, to go and dig! I Hate My Job - Now What Have you ever thought I hate my job? According to a recent publication  by the Gallup Organization entitled, State of the Global Workplace, Employee Engagement Insights for Business Leaders Worldwide,  only 13% of employees are engaged at work.  By engaged, they mean that they are emotionally invested and actually showing up for work to contribute each day.  To me, that means we have a lot of people going to work and doing tasks and functions, and their minds are somewhere else.  This I would define as a job. Career versus Job Jobs are tasks and functions without your heart.  A career is when everything is engaged, and your heart is in your tasks.  It reminds of when I ask my mom how she makes such delicious biscuits and she says, with love.  Any task, no matter how great or small, can be increased when your heart is there too.  Therefore, any job can be transformed into a career if you so choose. How to Show Up at Work Now, I am not naive to workplace challenges.  Bosses matter. Teams matter.  Putting your heart into something only to have someone shoot it down in the board room is a sure way never to show up at work again.  However, dealing with these issues doesnt have to squelch your creativity.  I must admit, its a hard and fine line to travel, but here are some words of advice and encouragement to help you show up at work. Be conscious about where your mind is at work. Write down the issues that continue to get under your skin and cause you to shut down. Come up with a plan to address or confront the issue (even if that means you start looking for a better fit). Give yourself motivation, what is one thing that you can align yourself with that motivates you (at times for me, its been a paycheck). Think of five areas that you are proud of in your work. You Control Your State of Mind Youll never be able to control other people at work; not your boss, not your co-workers, not your employees.  The only power you really have is over your own behavior and your own choices at work.  So, start with your current, I hate my job, position.  Use it as a muscle you are trying to develop to really show up at work.  Sometimes a change of attitude can shift the dynamics enough so that a job change isnt needed.  And other times, its time to pack your bags. The first step is to show up at work and try.  I know times are tough and its scary to think of a job search in todays economy, so start  small by shifting your mentality to I want to show up or I am ready to put my heart into something. This is the first step towards a fulfilling career.  How to get there will come, in time. The Awesome Person in the Terrible Hoodie - When I Grow Up Roald Dahl print by KensieKate Oh, how I love that  Danielle Euzent from Urban Darling. Not only has she taken my man from hot to sizzling, shes helping us all in how to encourage your loved ones to make some positive changes. Its advice you could apply to your marriage, your career, or your wardrobe. Either way, its gonna look good on everyone. Last time I guest blogged here, I coincidentally ran into Michelle (and Friends) while walking home that evening.   Of course we talked about what you readers would want to learn about in my next blog post, and one of the first things that came up was “How do I get my husband to stop wearing those terrible hoodies?”   (Or, you know, insert whatever terrible item of clothing your significant other will not stop wearing.)   Excellent question!   While I cannot guarantee success, I do have some suggestions that might encourage your better half to make some positive changes. I find the most effective thing you can do in this situation is to provide “approved alternatives”.   So you hate his hoodies?   Maybe buy him a classed-up version, like a well-fitting French terry sweatshirt.   Still relaxed and comfy, but less juvenile and not so frequently associated with psycho-murderer-types.   The key is to make sure the replacement item is not too far of a jump from the item it is replacing.   You have to ease them into change if you want it to be successful and well-received See: “Compromise”. Another really great way to foster change is by rewarding good behavior (no, your significant other is not a dog).   Let’s say your lady friend always wears black, but really looks fantastic in colors.   Next time she puts on a blue shirt instead of her normal black shirt, you might want to let her know how gorgeous her eyes look in that shirt.   Baby steps here, Folks. The third thing you can do is hire them a personal stylist (like myself, *ahem*).   People tend to be more receptive to a professional third party who is not emotionally involved.   We are excellent at explaining things in new ways while remaining neutral, and because we clearly have this person’s best interests in mind we get results much quicker.   There is just something about hearing it from someone who hasn’t been nagging you for months that really gives a person that Lightbulb Moment. And my final bit of wisdom:   Never, ever, ever, ever, ever criticize, nag, yell, or be mean in another way.   Ultimately, they are just clothes, and you care about this person regardless of what they are wearing.   Making someone feel bad about themselves or their choices will never produce positive change and will only hurt your relationship.   There will come a time when you may have to decide to love them in their terrible hoodie, or not at all And may I just say:   I suggest choosing the awesome person in the terrible hoodie.
